APPALACHIAN MOUNTAIN DULCIMERS |
|
This instrument is one of the very few that is credited with being
invented in North America. It originated in the Eastern United States
about 200 years ago. Generally, it is considered to be a Folk
instrument. There are many examples of it being played on YouTube.
They are a lot of fun to play and easily learned.
I make two body shapes, a Teardrop and an Hourglass. I can make them
to order if you want special woods or binding. The following photos
show what woods and materials I currently use.
Dulcimers are usually tuned 1 - 5 -1 in the key of D. this means that
the treble strings are D, the center string is A and the bass string
is also D but an octave lower than the treble strings. There are many
other tunings that can be used.
I use a scale length of 28.83 inches and a guitar type headstock
rather than a more traditional peg box and scroll design. I think this
is a superior tuning system. The nuts and saddles are bone. The finish
is a natural oil or poly urethane.
Teardrop and Hourglass shaped Dulcimers are $375.00 Special orders will
be priced accordingly.
This does not include a case, however, I can provide a hand quilted
fabric case for an extra $75.00
All displayed dulcimers are sold but a new run
will be completed in the New Year.
Watch for the new photos.
